There is an amazingly school in Brooklin, Maine called The Wooden Boat School. Located in a breathtakingly beautiful region of the Maine coast (a five-hour drive north of Boston, MA), our 60-acre “saltwater campus” encourages both faculty and students to feel at home and happily immerse themselves in a world of boatbuilding and boating.
Introduction courses are taught on art of sailing – you can learn how to build a boat through a course called – The Fundementals of Boat Building or build your own Willow Sea Kayak, Fox Canoe or Wooden Surfboard. Should your desire be vintage Pond Yachts you can learn to build those as well. Other crafts are also taught at the facility like sailmaking, marine photography, watercolor journals and functional and decorative knots and ropework.
Check it out – The Wooden Boat School.
They even offer a family week August 2-8, 2009.

I went to the WoodenBoat School from 1993 until 2007 to learn sailing. It is a great place to learn anything about wooden boats. The ambiance is fantastic. And you can’t beat the price anywhere. By the way the food is made from scratch and is the best. I recently bought an Herreshoff H-28 which I am sailing this summer out of Kittery, Me. and I expect to spend cruising time on Penobscot Bay and visit the school. Also just by watching and talking to the students and teachers, I was able to build a CLC pram to be my tender for my ketch. The staff led by Rich Helsinger, the director, and his assistant Kim Sexton, are first rate and often leaders in their particular specialties. They all have years of experience and love to teach. You also have access to the library at WoodenBoat Publications which has every book and periodical about wooden boats.

Thanks for your comments Alex. It’s now a dream of mine to make a pond yacht.
