Jim Denevan – Artist + Chef + Slow Food

Jim Denevan is a chef from California, but not all of his handy work fits easily onto a plate. Denevan also creates huge freehand sand drawings using a combination of tools and a truck. Recently one of his pieces has been dubbed the ‘largest freehand drawing in the world’ and it certainly is big at 3 miles (4.8km) across.  The circular work took 100 (160km) miles / eight days of walking to complete and was washed away in a rainstorm.

Like Andy Goldsworthy, he heads out into nature and finds new ways to express himself. No computers, upscale tools or even an audience.

and then there’s Outstanding in the Field…

Outstandinginthefield is an event which includes a tour of a farm and a dinner following on a table that seats up to 150 people.  Check out his website for locations near you.   In my area – and I’d covet the experience to participant there are two options:

July 18: Vancouver, BC, Canada – North Arm Farm, Pemberton

July 19: Vancouver, BC, Canada – UBC Farm, Vancouver

You can reserve your spot – here or here.

Jim’s work has been featured in the New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, Elle, GQThe Surfers Journal, and Outside, as well as in many other national and international publications.
