The Elements of Style
Brevity is what probloggers advise so I picked up The Elements of Style at the library. Not an easy read for those of us who paid more attention to socializing in school than actually concentrating on what a reflective clause was. My mother drilled speaking correctly into my brain and this little read, with concentration, will help improve my brevity skills for sure. (you’re not suppose to use “little” as suggested in the book – but it is a little book and a little read)
A tad outdated at times. I haven’t used “thrall” lately. Had to look it up actually. “One, such as a slave or serf, who is held in bondage or one who is intellectually or morally enslaved.”
An Approach to Style
Rule #9 – Do not affect a breezy manner.
“The breezy style is often the work of an egocentric, the person that imagines that everything that comes to mind is of general interest and that uninhibited prose creates high spirits and carries the day.”
Is that me I wonder? Am I using a breezy manner right now? Am I a breezy manner writer?
The book’s illustrations are beauteous. I’m not sure if I used the ’s correctly and I’m sure I did not avoid a fancy word. Rule #14 – Avoid fancy words.
I have alot to learn.
Oui, oui I do. Rule #20 – Avoid foreign languages.
